HONEYMAN GROUP SUPPORTS NHS WITH STERILE SERVICES EXPERTISE
13/07/2009
The Honeyman Group, the Barnard Castle-based pharmaceutical process
support specialist, has formalised a new service to NHS Trusts, which
ensures medical equipment is sterile and safe to be re-used.
Following a successful pilot programme for a small group of NHS Sterile
Services Departments (SSD), Honeyman Group is now offering the service
across the entire organisation.
Sterile Services Departments ensure instruments are clean, safe and
ready to be used again. They also prepare endoscopy equipment and a
range of other medical devices, which require sterilisation for
continual use.
Central to the service is the Honeyman Group’s expertise in validating
the ability of SSD equipment to perform effective sterilisation. The
company will also service equipment and maintain the electronic systems
that control the sterilisation process.
Honeyman Group has built a strong relationship with the NHS over the
past decade, particularly with 10 of the 24 licensed manufacturing units
across the UK. Known as Pharmacy Manufacturing Units (PMU), these
departments manufacture specialist medicines to meet the individual
requirements of certain patients who cannot be treated by licensed
medications. Having to comply with the same stringent regulations
as pharmaceutical manufacturers in the private sector, the PMUs engage
The Honeyman Group to ensure sterile production of products such as eye
drops and injections.
Among the services Honeyman Group provides to the PMUs are the design,
installation and validation of purified water systems, which use water
for the production of intravenous medicines and the cleaning of
production areas and equipment. As part of the water system,
Honeyman Group can also provide Pure Steam Generators, which produce
‘clean’ steam for cleaning.
Trevor Honeyman, Chairman of the Honeyman Group said: “Sterile Services
Departments provide an absolutely vital facility in maintaining the high
standard of medical care offered by the NHS. Honeyman Group has created
a suite of services that effectively support and validate the work the
departments undertake and, after a successful trial, I am confident we
can work with a large number of NHS Trusts across the UK.
“The application of our sterilisation and water purification services
has proven effective in almost half of the Pharmacy Manufacturing Units
in the UK and our reputation is growing within the organisation.”
